Apart from designing a cool modern cabin, Allen+Maurer Architects embarked on this modern residential endeavor with a mind to preserving the surrounding environment. As a result, “No tree was cut, no rock was blasted, no contours remodeled,” boast the architects of this Naramata-area home in British Columbia. The Maurer Residence consists of four buildings, designed among existing mature trees, with the Rockies on the horizon and the tranquil Okanagan Lake at its feet. The atmosphere of West-Coast serenity saturates every inch of this modern cabin. A large terrace welcomes time outdoors, while a large wall of glass fronts the lake. As described by the architects, “Form-Follows-Physics” is the principle behind the design. “Simple roofs, no roof intersections, large overhangs, good ventilation, finishes that are durable and appropriate to the climate: tile flooring, metal cladding and roofing, state-of-the-art Low-E glazing.”
