The Manio/Downing Residence by architect Dan Hisel is a private, wood clad house that he describes as a couple of "highly crafted boxes in the woods," but it’s so much more. The simplicity of this contemporary courtyard house plan is striking and complementary to its woody surroundings on this five-acre plot in the outskirts of Boston.

The forest home is a totally functional design for a family of five, accommodating day-to-day living and entertaining while also providing the parents with each their own office space. The two timber boxes are connected to form an L-shape, allowing for a front courtyard nestled between the two volumes.

Inside, four bedrooms, a large living and dining area and casual living spaces round out the spacious, airy floor plan. Interiors are traditional, with a contemporary edge. Warm wood floors accompany the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the forest outside.
